HOMESTAY REQUIREMENTS

We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure a positive homestay experience for each visiting student and for each homestay.

To this end, we require, during the application process, that:

  • As a part of the application process, each adult member of a homestay family submit a criminal record check
  • That at least one adult member of a homestay family attend an orientation/information session each year.
  • All family members be present during the homestay manager’s inspection of the home and be in agreement regarding the family commitment to host an international student

Homestay settings must offer students:

  • A clean and well organized living environment
  • A private bedroom, which includes a comfortable bed, study table, lamp and window
  • Easily accessible bathroom and laundry facilities

Homestay parents must offer students:

  • A safe, nurturing, supportive home environment
  • three substantial meals a day and nutritious snacks
  • airport or ferry pick up upon arrival and drop off at departure
  • opportunities to participate in family activities
  • support for student interest in cultural, athletic and community activities
  • the guidance and support reasonable to expect of adults who are assuming responsibility for the care of a young person who is far from their own family

International students are expected to:

  • submit a homestay profile page, which allows them to list specific interests and requests regarding their future homestay family. Once a family is selected, we will email a profile with pictures and contact numbers/email address, so that new students will have more information about their host family and will be able to make initial contact prior to arrival, if desired.
  • sign a program participation agreement that outlines our program expectations regarding homestay, school and community activities
  • meet the reasonable, age-appropriate expectations of their homestay family regarding family activities, rituals and traditions

Guiding Principles for all Homestays:

1 – Treat the student as you would your own child,
2 – Treat the student as you would want your child to be treated if s/he were staying with a homestay family in a different country.

Please note: We have a significant number of families who have made a long and positive commitment to parenting successive homestay students. Your acceptance into our community of homestay parents does not mean that you will host a student during any specific period.
